It’s May 27th 2016 and I’ve not long received an email from Roccbox saying that initial shipping from the crowdfunding campaign is delayed. Bleuh.
I then hear that Aldi are selling a Pizza Oven for £99. So slightly against my better judgement I head off to take a look at it and it looks good to me. It was similar to ones I’ve considered buying online like this one from KuKoo or this one from Forno Buono. So I take the plunge, build it a couple of days later and it made its cooking debut yesterday. I would have never thought I’d be cooking on an Aldi pizza oven!
I’d also been building a garden kitchen table out of some leftover planks and wooden floor. You can see the garden kitchen mid construction above, and then the first lighting of the oven! I was burning kiln dried hardwood and gave it a good 30 minutes to get up to temperature. I couldn’t get much above 330C in the oven itself, but I’ll keep experimenting.
Nonetheless we pressed on and made our first pizza in the new oven. I’d made the pizza dough in line with the recipe here on GardenOvens and a simple, no cook, tomato sauce. Everyone in the family added toppings of their choice, and the pizzas tasted great.
So, through an unlikely source in Aldi, we are up and running with wood fired oven cooking!
The oven is advertised as 3-in-1, which is for roasting, smoking and pizza making. It comes with the pizza stone for the latter and looks like it’ll do a good job of roasting. Will let you know how it goes.
